Teradata and Informatica

Business Scenario

Company - Australian Pharmaceutical Industries [API]

API is one of Australia's leading providers of products and services to branded and independent community pharmacies. It provides daily distribution of products to pharmacies through its network of distribution centers and regional branches throughout Australia.

"Efficiency in the API pharmaceutical wholesale business is vital to ensure that Australians are able to access all medicines from their local pharmacy within 24 hours no matter where they live," said Doug Horwood, manager of information management, API Pharmacy.

Business Requirement - improve API's ability to react to changed circumstances and assist in monitoring performance and profitability through aggregated data and improved reporting.

Information Solution

API implemented a Teradata EDW and Informatica's integration software for information delivery to support its pharmaceutical wholesale business division.

Enterprise Data Warehouse

API's new Enterprise Data Warehouse on a Teradata 550P server with 2.1 terabytes of spinning disk. This configuration is designed as an entry-level data warehouse server.

The Teradata 550P Server and Teradata Database offer a completely integrated data warehouse solution with optimized system performance. API chose the 550P server for its speed, simplicity and affordability, making it the ideal investment for the growing logistical demands of its pharmacy wholesale business.

Data Integration

Informatica provided the data integration platform utilizing PowerCenter 8 and PowerExchange to support all the data management for the Teradata EDW.

Business Benefits

The new EDW will:

  1. Better support the ever-changing API business with better and faster information delivery to business users.
  2. Significant improve the routine publishing of daily analytical reports
  3. Provide more ad hoc on-demand capability to the user community

The combination of technologies from Teradata and Informatica will help improve our ability to react to changed circumstances and assist us in monitoring performance and profitability through appropriately aggregated data and improved reporting.

This case example demonstrates a common trend for corporations to turn to data warehousing for competitive advantage. The link between data management and successful data warehousing is becoming more apparent.
